Maker’s Showcase: Floral Blouse from Hatts Atelier

Welcome back to Maker’s Showcase! Today we have a returning guest, Harriette Gaskill from Hatts Atelier! She wowed us last time with her floral trousers and now she’d back to talk us through this stunning blouse.

Tell us a little about your garment:

Which pattern did you use?

I decided on making The Blouse from the Avid Seamstress.

What inspired you to make it?

I have just completed a level 2 City & Guilds in fashion and this pattern fitted the criteria perfectly for my final piece.

Would you make it again, and if so, would you do anything differently?

I would definitely make it again. I had to make a change to the pattern for the final piece but next time I will probably follow the actual pattern with the elasticated cuff as I really like that style. The changes I made were shirring to the cuffs as I thought this would be a unique finish and I was really pleased with the result.

What was it about your chosen fabric from Ditto that caught your eye?

I brought my pattern into Ditto knowing they would give me fantastic advice and Gill took me straight to this gorgeous print and I’m so happy with the result. I was a bit worried about pattern matching but fortunately Gill gave excellent, in depth instructions which really helped me. I couldn’t have done it without her. It was near on perfect which I was very pleased with as I’ve never pattern matched before.

Tell us a little about yourself:

How long have you been sewing for, and how did you first get into it?

I have been sewing for about a year now. I needed a zip repairing, so my mum got her old Bernina out of the loft that she hadn’t used for years – she was amazed at its value and though it would be rude not to use it, so decided to get me interested.

Do you have any favourite patterns or fabrics you always return to?

Crystal pleated fabric is one of my favourites and I bought it in every colour that you stock!  I’ve used it to make endless Simplicity (8134, version A) trousers which are great for any occasion as they can be either dressed up or down.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received/lesson learnt?

Measure twice cut once – I learnt that the hard way!

Thank you so much to Harriette for joining us, and make sure to give her some love on Instagram. See you next time for another Maker’s Showcase!
