Trend Focus: Trouser Silhouettes

As Autumn draws in and the days of going bare-legged become fewer and further between, it’s time to look forward and see what trouser shapes, styles and silhouettes will be cropping up in the new season.

Culottes have become somewhat of a high street staple in recent years, matching utilitarian practicality with a chic, sophisticated silhouette. Originally worn by the French aristocracy and popularised by Elsa Schiaparelli in the 30’s, culottes history of being something women would be arrested for wearing, to becoming an icon of French Girl Cool has been quite the ride. This season is no exception with culottes still firmly at the forefront of Autumn/Winter fashion. A great example are these A/W 19 wool culottes from Cos, as pictured below, left. Note how the slightly cropped leg balances out the silhouette and prevents the trousers from swamping the frame. A great pattern to get a similar look would be Burda 6436, the Misses Wide Leg Trousers pattern as pictured below right,  which has the added bonus of darts, pockets and a fly zip for a more contemporary look.

The New Elastic

Now I know what you’re thinking, but elasticated waistbands aren’t just for pyjamas and pensioners! This season it would appear hybridisation is key, and this look is a combination of sportswear, loungewear and smart casual. Below left are Zara’s A/W 19 Tencel Joggers, featuring elasticated waist and cuffs with oversize topstitched pockets.

Below right is Burda’s take on the trend, (Burda 6283) a cosy, loose-fitting trouser that can be easily dressed up or down for any occasion. Australian pattern brand Tessuti also have the ‘Demi Pant’  pattern, a pull-on cropped trouser with elasticated waist and hem which would look fantastic. The recommended fabrics here are cotton, linen or any other lightweight natural fabric.

Wide Leg Flares

Would you dare to flare? Dramatic wide-legged trousers are back in a big way this season. The 70’s trend is still going strong and nothing is more synonymous with the era than a pair of flares. Whether worn cropped as more of a culottes style or in their full length glory, this eye-catching design flatters the form to create an elegant sophisticated silhouette.

Below we have two examples, the first being a pair of navy wide-legged pleat detail trousers from ASOS. Alongside is a near dead ringer in the form of Burda 6573, which is recommended in lightweight wool, linen or cotton. The pattern matching of the hounds tooth fabric on the Burda mock up makes for a beautiful smooth appearance, with a flattering boxy finish around the leg. Pair these trousers with a light cropped jacket for an instantly classic look.

For a more dramatic mood, a big trend this season is the super wide leg tailored trouser, as seen below here. On the left we have another ASOS special, a stunning jewel green pantsuit. The oversize blazer really adds to the 80’s-influenced ‘Boyfriend Fit’ androgyny that has been really in this year.

To create this look at home we’ve sourced Burda 6544 which can be made in two lengths and seen below right, which is recommended in cotton, linen or lightweight woven fabrics. These beautifully airy trousers are perfect for a late summer wedding or garden party, and will see you right through til winter!

Which Fabrics?

Here at Ditto we specialise in having unique, high-quality and fabulous fabrics to suit every project! Trousers are an incredibly versatile year-round garment, and the type of fabric you use can make all the difference. In warmer climes for example, it may be best top opt for an easy breathable linen or lightweight cotton to provide a relaxed flowy style and comfort. For chillier times, wool, wool blends and heavier weight cottons such as denim will provide bring a classy look to a functional piece, creating a shapely silhouette from the more structured fabrics.

Above are some fabrics we’d recommend for trying out a new trouser style this season. Firstly we have a couple of our brushed cotton checks, in Royal blue and forest green. Tartan check is set to be a huge trend for A/W 19 and we have plenty in store! These are a medium weight woven check, and would be great for the elasticated waist joggers featured above, or perhaps a pair of cigarette trousers.

Secondly we have a glimpse of our collection of colourful stretch denims. Featured in brick red and tobacco here, we also have many more colours and shades in store. Comprised of a 98% cotton and 2% elastane blend, this fabric is strong and durable but with just the right amount of give to create the perfect fit. These would work beautifully in a pair of straight leg trousers or culottes.

Lastly we have a duo of wool checks, which are perfect for the approaching winter. Wool trousers have been an essential wardrobe staple for years, and it’s easy to see why. With our 100% British wool fabrics, you can ensure a super soft and warm pair of trousers that will last and last. Not only in a check design, we also have houndstooth, pinstripe and printed wools in store for whatever project you may have in mind!
